The natural conditions around the village determined its name. To the east of the village until the end of the 19th century lay large muddy and muddy, difficult to access and passable areas. The village and its surroundings literally abounded in an abundance of mud. Its name is derived from the ancient Slavic name "bolto", or "boloto", from which the name of the village Blatné, Blatná or Blatnica probably originated. After the establishment of the Hungarian state, the Hungarians took over the name, Hungarianized it and the village bore such a name until 1948. In history, it is known by various names. Until 1913 it is mentioned as Sarfy, Sarfew, Saarfo, Ssárfia, Pozsonysárfo, until 1948 as Šarfia. Since 1948 it has been called Blatné.

The beginnings of the settlement date back to the sixth millennium BC. It is represented by a system of settlements from the Late Stone Age. The remains of the oldest settlement were discovered on the terrace between Blatný and Čataj in the positions "by the cemetery" and "Štrky". They come from the period of the people with the culture of the older linear ceramics, the younger linear ceramics, the iron group, the boleráz group. There was also a skeletal burial ground of the people with the Unetic culture. The finds in Blatno represent the westernmost occurrence of Bukovok culture in Slovakia. Remains of the Neolithic settlement were also found on the border with the Igrám area in the position "Pažiť" near the highway, on the terrace towards Senec in the position "Pustáky" in the village near the stream and especially on the elevated terrace on the banks of the stream between Blatný and Šenkvice. There was also a settlement from the Late Bronze Age, La Tène, Roman-Provincial. In the spring of 2001, a skeletal burial ground from the Early Bronze Age from the Nitra period was discovered in the "Pustáky" locality. At the beginning of 2007, hunters discovered ceramics, millstones and other historical "trifles" from several periods in the drained Blatné reservoir. The toy figure - the horse's head (from the Iron Age) is part of the exhibition "The oldest history of Slovakia" in the exhibition pavilion PODHRADIE, on Žižková street 16 in Bratislava.
