Košice is the first European city to receive its own coat of arms. In 1369, King Ľudovít Veľký granted it for the first time to a legal entity - the city of Košice. Another championship is associated with sports - the oldest European marathon and the second oldest world marathon - the International Peace Marathon (founded in 1924) - will start in Košice on the first Sunday in October. Dome of St. Elizabeth is the easternmost Gothic cathedral in Europe. The historic center is the largest urban conservation area in the Slovak Republic. The oldest secondary school in Central Europe was also founded in Košice - in 1872 the Secondary Industrial School of Mechanical Engineering. The city has the largest zoo in Central Europe (288 hectares) and the largest Slovak botanical garden with the largest collection of cacti in the former Czechoslovakia. The children's railway in the Čermeľ Valley is the oldest and the only one in Slovakia.

The town lies in the Košice basin in a wide valley of the river Hornád, bordered on the west by the foothills of the Slovak Ore Mountains. The city center is located at an altitude of 208 meters. The climate in Košice is moderately warm with average temperatures of 19 ° C in July and -3 ° C in January.

Within its administrative boundaries, the city has an area of 243.7 km2 and has a population of 239,141 (as of 31 December 2016). The population density reaches 1008.9 persons / km2. It is the seat of the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic and the seat of the Košice self-governing region. As a separate legal entity, it is divided into 22 city districts.

The average age of the inhabitants of the city is 41.21 years. In its report, it has 34 primary and 63 kindergartens. The network of secondary schools consists of grammar schools, secondary vocational schools and vocational schools, business academies, medical and art schools. The highest level of education is provided by 9 faculties of the Technical University of Košice, 5 faculties of the University of PJ Šafárik, the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy and other workplaces of Slovak universities.

The city of Košice was the holder of the title of European Capital of Culture for 2013 together with the French city of Marseille. After the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture 2013, Košice, as the first city in Slovakia, won another important title - European City of Sport 2016.
