From time immemorial, the town of Ilava has been considered the heart of the Ilava Basin, lying in the arms of the picturesque Považie Mountains. The basin is almost 27 kilometers long and 4 kilometers wide. Above the carpets of the green mountains on the northwest side, limestone stone cliffs and the ruins of the once proud border guard castle Vršatec rise. The Strážovská hornatina stretches to the southeast, above which the Vápča stone cone rises. The historical part of the city lies on the southern loess terrace at an altitude of 253 meters above sea level, while the railway station and the part of Ilava located in the Váh river basin below the terrace are only at an altitude of 243.5 m. The latitude is 48 ° 59´ 50´´ and the longitude of the city is 18 ° 14´ 10´´.
