City of Handlová

Handlová is incorporated into the Upper Nitra region. It lies in the southeastern part, on the main urbanization axis Trenčín - Bánovce - Prievidza - Handlová - Žiar nad Hronom. The city has a tradition of mining industry. Industrial coal mining began in Handlova in 1909. The Handlovská mine is the oldest brown coal mine in Slovakia.

On March 8, 1376, King Louis I the Great issued a charter for the settler Henrich Kricker so that he could establish his house and settlement in a place called the Beautiful Forest (Seperdeo) and fill it with many people.
About 200 families came with him from the town of Kremnice to the new seat. In Slovakia, in the second half of the 13th and throughout the 14th century, the wounds were healed due to not long-lasting but more devastating Tatar invasions under the leadership of Batuchán. It was a period of gradual economic development. One of the forms was the so-called "Šoltý colonization". The result was resettlement, resp. resettlement of the first existing settlements and the creation of new settlements. Handlová was also founded on this basis. At the time of Handlová's founding, it was "empty" in its future territory.
There was only a forest, beautiful - SEPERDEO VITA. Pure unspoiled nature.
In the charter it was written: ".... Henrich, said Chrikeer ..., ... in a certain forest place called Seperdeo ..., sometimes empty ..., he founded the village ..., ..and decorated a lot of people .
The founder was the hereditary mayor Henrich Kriker and the original German population was mainly engaged in agriculture and pastoralism.
The first reports of coal did not appear until the second half of the 18th century, when coal was mined for the needs of Bojnice Castle.
The mining plant was established in 1909. At that time, the population of Handl's miners consisted of various nationalities, who moved to the city for work.
After the end of II. During World War II, the composition of the population also changed. While in 1943 our city had a population of 12,800, after 1945 their number dropped to 4,000, due to the emigration of most of the original population to Germany.
The status of the town was granted to Handlová in 1960. This year is also associated with the sad memory of the landslide at the upper end of the town, which affected many Handlov families.
