The village of Batizovce

Batizovce lies on a plain that stretches at the southern foot of the High Tatras. To the south is Babia Hora, the first outcrop of the Low Tatras. The Batizov area has an area of 1451 ha and is located at an altitude of 715 - 860 m. The center of the village has an altitude of 750 m.

Historical development of the area

Evidence of settlement is from the Early Stone Age - Paleolithic. 700 to 4000 years ago, the population began to settle in this micro-region in the lee of the High Tatras on the road to Liptov.

A smoothed stone ax is stored in the collections of the Podtatranské Museum in Poprad. This roughly 4,500-year-old work tool was used to work wood. In 1965, during an excavation in the courtyard of a late Romanesque church, a partially battered core of red-brown raw material, whose age is similar, was saved. Such a tool replaced the function of today's knives. During sounding works in the courtyard of the Roman Catholic Church in 1965, a polished polished bowl, a bronze saddle bracelet and a ring made of gray metal appeared on a circle. The findings belong to an advanced La Tène culture. It can be assumed that on the terraced ridge above the Batizovské brook / Kahule / there was a Celtic burial ground in the 2nd century BC, so far the westernmost in eastern Slovakia. This is evidenced by the ceramic material from the situated hardened vessels, decorated with vertical grooves and a solid thin-walled painted shard from a vessel turned on a potter's wheel.

history

The first historical mention of Batizovce comes from the middle of the 13th century, when the original Celtic seat was located here. In 1264, the village was founded on the right of purchase by the Comes Batiz (Botiz), the son of Marek z Markušoviec, to whom the Hungarian king Belo IV les Chetene. In 1279, Batiz commissioned the hereditary mayors Gotšalka of Matejoviec and Froling of Veľká to eradicate and settle this forest. The inhabitants of the village could use privileges like other municipalities, they could elect a mayor, a pastor, etc. However, it can be said that Batiz was not the founder of the village, but only the restorer of the older village of Cetina from the Great Moravian period, located on an important road from Veľká to Lučivná. The village later belonged to the Mariáš family. They had a Renaissance manor house built in the 16th century, and rebuilt it in the 18th century. The Baroque manor house was built by the Mariáš family in 1756.

The Batizovský stream flows through the village, which stretches between two parallel streets. The houses were built by the road, with a courtyard and farm buildings at the back. The inhabitants were engaged in agriculture, forestry work, burning coal, catching trout, pottery, making painted chests and weaving linen. In 1794, a linen bleach was built here. The Batiz canvas was of very high quality and well-known in a wide area.

Perhaps the worst period in the existence of Batizoviec can be considered the years 1889-1890, when a wave of fires in two years destroyed 80 farms and 24 houses. When comparing the situation from 1787, when the village had 109 houses and 896 inhabitants, almost every farm was affected by the fire. The poverty that the village got into drove many out of their homeland, and the overall situation sparked a wave of emigration to America.

During the First Czechoslovak Republic, the inhabitants of the village were mainly engaged in agriculture, but there was also a brickyard, which was abolished in 1965. JRD was founded in 1950. In the 1930s, a factory of the Baťa company was built in the nearby town of Svit, which became the main provider of job opportunities. In 1956, a detached development workplace of the Brno brick works was established in the village with a focus on improving technology, mechanization of production and verification of the properties of new types of building components.

The Roman Catholic Church of All Saints from the second quarter of the 13th century belongs to the single-nave late Romanesque buildings with a square presbytery, it was renovated around 1300. The church was Baroque in the years 1764-1767. The main cloister rococo altar of the Virgin Mary, the side altar of St. Joseph and St. Dizmasa dates from 1776. In 1967, late Romanesque frescoes were uncovered in the interior of the church, as well as paintings on the outside of the church. In the annex behind the sanctuary there is a tombstone of the Mariáš family from 1696 dedicated to Ján Mariáš and his wife Žofia Palugya. The church has the following bells: undated signal made in Budapest by Walser Ferenz, Ján Nepomucký, made in 1777 and Urban bell with a diameter of 118 cm, made in 1925 in the company Müller in Brno.

The current evangelical church was built in the Classicist style in the years 1784-1791 under the pastor Juraj Eger. In 1797, a turret was built on the church. The Classicist altar from 1814 was exhibited by General Ondrej Mariáš. In 1816, he had a pulpit built as a reverential memory of his parents. In the interior there is a stone baptistery from 16.-17. century. In the church there are memorial plaques dedicated to the pastor Ondrej Škultéty and the pastor Daniel Dianišek. The tower was added to the church in 1960. In the tower there is a large bell from 1924, which was cast by Adolf Friedman from Sabinov and a small bell from 1899, which was made by the company Thury János és fia Ferencz from Budapest. In 1800, Anna Mária Horvát-Stančičová de Gradec, the wife of František Mariáš, had the family tomb erected, which also housed the remains of General Ondrej Mariáš.

General symbols

Batizovce is named after the nobleman Botyz, a member of a later important family from the Markušovce Mariáši family. However, Batizovce, despite its name, did not create a coat of arms in the Middle Ages, which would be derived from Botyz, res. Mariášiovského. The oldest symbol of Batizoviec depicts a man holding a huge key in his right hand. The seal is round, with the circle SIGIL.BOTIS.DORF.1526 and the mentioned symbol is shown here in the shield. The problem is the interpretation of the sign. At first glance, it would seem that this is the figure of St. Peter, whose attribute was the key. In Batizovce, however, there has always been the patronage of All Saints, and so the question of the origin of St. Petra remains open. Nor can it be ruled out that the saint is not depicted in the seal, but the man with the key has a different symbolic meaning. Due to the ambiguity with the identification of the character, only the large golden key according to the historical seal is depicted in the coat of arms of Batizoviec. This clean and at the same time extremely deep and multi-meaningful symbol ranks the Batizoviec coat of arms among our most remarkable municipal coats of arms.

The flag of Batizovce consists of three longitudinal stripes in red (2/7), yellow (3/7) and red (2/7). The flag ends with three points.
