The owners of the mines were wealthy burghers and the Thurzov-Fugger media company. At that time, copper was exported to markets in Western Europe and India. In 1888, mining activities ceased. Today's Špania Dolina is a very attractive place. The beautiful mountain environment, historic and renovated houses and the remains of mining activities create a unique genius loci of this village. The dominant feature is the Roman Catholic Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord from 1254. A covered staircase with 162 steps leads to it from the square. Although the village has less than 200 permanent residents and about a hundred cottagers, it is visited annually by about 10,000 tourists. Every year in the village there is a traditional slaughterhouse, creative workshops, cooking local food scorpion, theater festival Spandiv, pumpkin entertainment, cooking plum jam Plum parade, torchlight procession Faklcúg. The local lacemakers often perform their art in the square.
