The village of Veľký Klíž is located at the northern foot of the Tribeč Mountains in the basin connecting it with the Nitra river basin.
Veľký Klíž has a rich history and many monuments. The most important monument is the Romanesque church in the cemetery in Klížský Hradiště. In the locality of Vrchhora are the ruins of a renaissance church and the baroque Chapel of St. Ján Nepomucký. A stone castle once stood on nearby Michal's Hill. Klížske Hradište is the last resting place of the important Slovak writer Ladislav Ťažký.
