The village of Kmeťovo

Kmeťovo was originally called Gyrok and Ďorok, popularly Derek. Since 1948, however, the village was named after the Slovak nationalist, priest, archaeologist and botanist Andrej Kmeť.

But while the medieval Gyrok lay on the left bank of Zittau, roughly on the site of today's settlement of Gedra, today's Kmeťovo lies on the right bank of the river. There are only a few houses and an old watermill in Gedra. Historically, the village traveled from owner to owner. At the beginning of the 13th century in 1214, the garrison was under the dominion of the castle. Then it belonged to the Premonstratensian Order and at the end of the century it was already under the Archbishopric of Esztergom. For less than a century, it belonged to the Jelenec estate, administered by Gýmeš Castle. It is said that when the Turks invaded the village, the inhabitants redeemed themselves with cattle. But only for 40 years, because then in 1571 the Turks still looted it. It was then that people moved to live on the other side of Zittau. And from 1830, Ďorok belonged to the dominion of Veľká Mana. Even in the near past, the village traveled from district to district. Today it is part of the Novozámocký district, but it also belonged to the Vráble district. Quite a busy history, isn't it? Although the Grasalkovič family, known for its many palaces in Bratislava, Budapest and Vienna, is said to have come from Gyarok, the nobility has never been inhabited in Ďorok, so there is no manor house in the village. The church is also relatively young. It was built at the end of the 19th century and dedicated to the Virgin Mary of the Rosary. However, he was in such a wetland that geese often waded around him. It was not until much later that they drained the land and made a park there.

The visitor will probably enjoy the flat surroundings suitable for hiking and cycling trips. Maybe stop in the vineyards for a glass of good wine or taste the gifts of nature. Nature lover Andrej Kmeť probably never lived in Kmeťov, but at least he remained living in the name of this small Požitavská village.
