The town of Humenné is located in the northeastern part of eastern Slovakia, in the southwestern part of the Humenné district, in the valley of the Laborec river, which flows in part parallel to the state road number I / 74 and the railway line No. 191 (Medzilaborce - Humenné - Michalovce - Trebišov - Michaľany) , No.193 (Prešov - Strážske - Humenné), No.196 (Humenné - Stakčín) Zvolen, at an altitude of 157 meters above sea level in the geomorphological unit Ondavská vrchovina, subprovince of the Outer Eastern Carpathians, subunit Humenské podolie and parts of Sokol.

From a geological point of view, these geomorphological units belong to the flysch zone, which is built by alternating positions of sandstones and claystones.
The highest elevations include Sokol (405 m above sea level), Petočová (378 m above sea level) and Barančov (364 m above sea level).
Humenné is bordered by up to 11 villages - Hažín nad Cirochou, Lackovce, Kochanovce, Udavské, Veľopolie, Brestov, Myslina, Závadka, Brekov, Jasenov and Ptičie. The total area of its cadastral territory is 2867.4 ha.

In terms of hydrological conditions, the area belongs to the Bodrog basin. The Laborec River flows through the built-up area of the town, which has built protective dikes. There is a typical accumulation of water in the period from December to February with the highest flow in March and the lowest in September. The average annual flow of Laborca in Humenné is 10 m3 / s. The cadastral border runs along the Laborec stream to the east, further next to the quarry in Jasenov and through the northern part of Sokol, continues through the valley of the Ptava stream and breaks sharply to the north near the Humenné elevation. Then it goes over the locality of Čarnuška, crosses the state road, the railway line and the confluence of Laborec and Cirocha and passes over the whole Hubková valley, until it turns west around the Petočová elevation. From the locality of Vyšná Hubková, it is heading south near the Humenský brook, under Hola Hora it changes sharply to the west and behind the Lieskovec brook it takes a relatively smooth southwest direction towards the Brekovská gate. The whole cadastre is closed by the connection of the state road and near the flowing Laborec.
