The first written mentions of Sládkovič (Diószeg) can be found in the documents of King Béla IV. from 1252. The name of the settlement allegedly comes from the "walnut forest", which was located in the village. In 1301, the lord of the village was the family of Milóš Dudvágy, whose ancestors had farmed here for a long time.

In 1986, the village of Malá Mača was annexed to the town, and it became independent again in December 2002.
