The village of Sap

The village of Sap lies in the south of the Dunajská Streda district, directly at the Danube dam at the point where the waste canal of the Gabčíkovo Waterworks flows into the original Danube riverbed.

The village belongs to the settlements founded on Žitný ostrov many centuries ago. The first documentary records from the foundation of the village are from the year 1255, then the village belonged to the territory of the Bratislava Castle. In the 14th century, the documents write about two parts, the Lower Zape and the Upper Zape. In the 19th century, the well-known Count of Hédervári family also played a part here. For Austria - Hungary and during the Hortyhov occupation / 1938 - 1945 / it belonged to the Győr county in terms of territory. Since 1991, the village is again called Sap, as it was called over the centuries until 1948, when its name was changed to Palkovičovo.

The inhabitants of the village caused in agriculture, forestry and fishing. The main occupations included milling. In the 18th century, millers successfully operated 29 watermills on the Danube.
Throughout the year, the village lives a rich social life. Every year they organize a festival called "Fishing Day". The main goal of the event is to revive the fishing culture and tradition of the ancestors of the profession of fishing and angling. In April 2016, in the Romanian municipality of Livezeni, an agreement on cooperation was signed between four cross-border municipalities, namely from Hungary, Romania, Ukraine and Slovakia. The basis of the agreement is effective and lasting cooperation to create and develop mutual friendly relations between local governments and the inhabitants of the municipality who live in other countries with the same nationality. Organizations that operate in the village in various fields, such as culture, sports and charity, also contribute to the development of social life. These are: the Local Association of the Slovak Red Cross, the CSEMADOK Basic Organization, OFC SAP-ŇÁRAD, the Pensioners' Club, the Voluntary Fire Brigade and the Hunting Corps.

Next to the village on the Danube embankment, there is the International Cycling Route, marked by boards and signs, which is widely used by domestic and foreign cyclists.
As part of investment projects since 2014, the village has managed to modernize public lighting and local radio, reconstruct part of the sidewalks, build a camera system, and remove illegal landfills. The municipality has prepared project plans and is waiting for calls from the authorities concerned for the reconstruction of public buildings and premises. Furthermore, the possibility of creating a new location for land for family and apartment houses is being prepared.
At present, the village has 513 inhabitants. A small village, with a small number of inhabitants who live here in peace and quiet, do not know ethnic disputes, are tolerant, hardworking, love their village and its surroundings and welcome visitors from all over Slovakia and abroad.
