The village of Veľké Blahovo

The stormy days of history did not spare even the inhabitants of our village. In the Middle Ages, they were often decimated by contagious epidemics, a large part of the population fell in the national liberation struggle, in the First and Second World Wars, and we could not avoid the sad event of resettlement.

More than 90 percent of our population is of Hungarian nationality. The village of Veľké Blahovo has undergone the most significant development in the last century, which was of course related to social changes, technical development and a comprehensive increase in education. Verily, the appearance of the village has also changed fundamentally. Disappeared houses with cane roofs and tiny windows, rocking wells and farmyards, full of grain warehouses, with barns, barns and depots. Wagons pulled by oxen and horses became a memorial, as did the dirt roads and drumming of the common butler. Instead of houses with cane roofs, palace-like houses were built, with large windows, spacious rooms and bathrooms. The population is supplied with drinking water through a water pipe, a gas pipeline is installed in the whole village, the streets are dust-free and modern motor vehicles run on them. Instead of a drum, sound amplifiers speak to the inhabitants. Unfortunately, in the middle of the last century, the Baron's manor house, which was an ornament of the village, was demolished, and in its place today stands a cultural house. In the middle of the village was the house of the poor. There used to be the poorest citizens of the village, who had no choice but to make a living by begging. In the middle of the last century, this building was demolished, and an obelisk was built instead, a memorial to those who suffered martyrdom during fascism.

In the last century, our village has grown considerably. Several new streets were built, of which it is necessary to mention Železničná (Túlátá) Street, in which only a few houses stood a few decades ago. The pits, from which they sometimes mined material for houses built of unfired clay, were leveled, and a new series of houses were built in their place. There has also been a huge change in the field of education. While in the first half of the century there was not a single person who had a high school diploma or graduated from high school, in the second half of the century it was hardly possible to find a person in the village who did not have a secondary education. Many residents have obtained a university degree or university degree. A three-class school was built in the 1930s, and a kindergarten a few years later. The post office, built at the beginning of the century, was replaced by a modern post office and telecommunications building. There have also been major changes in agriculture. Not only the ownership right but also the results of the revenues changed. While one hundred years ago agricultural production was done by hand and with the help of animal power, they have been replaced by machines since the middle of the century.

In the 830-year history of our village, our citizens of Roma nationality, who have lived among us for centuries, also have a role to play. It is a fact that our village became famous in the world thanks to the Gypsies. Our excellent musicians and gypsy bands were known far beyond the borders of our village. The most important of them was János Bihari, a composer, an excellent figure of verbunk, who was born in our village on October 21, 1764.
