Šintava is among the oldest known localities in Slovakia mentioned in medieval chronicles and documents. Its importance is due to its location, which allows crossing the river Váh. In the past, the Váh was a very watery river that often meandered in its lower course, making it difficult to cross. It is therefore obvious that the place enabling the fording of the river attracted attention from a commercial and military point of view. This is evidenced by a settlement from the Iron Age, as well as a Great Moravian castle protecting the crossing over the Váh river, the foundation of a later medieval water castle.
The fact that two very important medieval roads intersected in the Šintava ford is also important, namely the so-called Czech road leading from Ostrihom via Trnava to Bohemia and the other road leading from Bratislava to Nitra. The mentioned roads crossing in Šintava connected such important cities as Ostrihom - the capital of the kingdom, Trnava - an important commercial and cultural center, Bratislava - a border fortress above the Danube ford and Nitra - an important center of Great Moravia.
