Mokrý Háj is a small village near the town of Skalica with 716 inhabitants. Unlike most Slovak towns and villages, the exact year of its founding is known, it is 1569. The founders of the village were the Croats, who fled their homeland from the Turks.

The richer native refugees were received by the royal town of Skalica, where they bought houses with appropriate land. Refugees who had nothing to buy property were allowed by the management of the town of Skalica to settle on desolate and uncultivated land, from which the town had no advantage and on which they established a village and found a source of livelihood. The newly established village was first a serf village of the town of Skalice. After the abolition of serfdom, Mokrý Háj became an independent municipality of the Skalický District. The diligence and bravery of the population were a valuable foreign exchange, so that even with their serf duties and despite various natural and war disasters, they gradually expanded their community and their material situation improved. In 1631, names of other origins, especially Czech, also appeared among the original Croatian refugees. This mixing of the population resulted in the village rapidly losing its Croatian character and the population formed a peculiar type of "Slovak people from the vicinity of Skalice". The locals retained their Slovak character even during the Hungarian pressure until the disintegration of Hungary (1918). In Mokrý Háj, neither the Croatian language of the original immigrants nor any special Croatian songs and folk customs have been preserved. After the establishment of a common state, Czechs and Slovaks, a richer cultural and economic life developed in the village. Wetlanders lived quite their lives, they had their habits and their pastimes. Weddings and festivities used to be, as elsewhere, full of rituals and entertainment; the groom gave the bride a dowry. The carnivals were quite untied, and there were riots. Great music used to be for feasts, when the young men took May in front of the pub on this occasion. However, there were also musicians on other Sundays and on days when there was a fair in Skalica and men often fought with music. A popular folk custom was dating Mikuláš.
