In 1854 part of Szerdahely, merged with its city districts and formed the city of Duna-Szerdahely. The united city had 7 traditional fairs. The change of empire after the Treaty of Trianon, the reunification of Hungary, the abduction of thousands of Jewish inhabitants during World War II. World War II and the expulsion of 110 Hungarian families on the basis of population change marked the history of the city in the 20th century, but also the life of its inhabitants. After 1948, the seat of the largest and most populous district in Czechoslovakia gradually became the administrative, industrial and cultural center of Žitný ostrov.
