The first historical report about Gbely dates from 1392. At that time, Gbely was one of the important settlements in Záhorie, because they had their own rectory. The name of the village is probably of Kuman origin. Not far from the village there is a hill called Ostrý vrch, after the Kuman egä bel. According to him, the village was once named. The Austrians still call it Egbell, the Slovaks changed their name to Gbely.

Gbely was part of the Holíč estate and belonged to its owner. In the 14th century they were Štiborovci, Šlikovci, from 1489 Czoborovci and from 1736 Habsburgovci. The last Czobor lost the barber estate in the cards. The manor was later bought by the Habsburgs. According to the census of 1452, Gbely with its 40 settlements was the third largest village of the manor (Holíč - Unín - Gbely). In 16.-17. century, Gbely gained city privileges - they had the right to organize 4 annual fairs, which favorably affected the growth of local crafts. In addition to agriculture, the inhabitants were engaged in the cultivation of hemp and the pressing of hemp oil, which they went to sell in Moravia and Vienna. The Habans, who settled in the village in 1547, contributed to the development of crafts. At the beginning of the 17th century, various disasters plagued the village. In 1602, Bočkay's soldiers came to Gbelov and burned down the Haban court. The Habans rented their residence in Gbelo from Imrich Czobor and the Turks burned it down in a few years. According to the canonical visitation, in these turbulent times, the church was destroyed and the village did not have a school. The general seal from the 15th century confirms the existence of municipal self-government in Gbelo. At the head of the Gbel municipality was a mayor with a general committee. Richtár and other municipal officials were elected by the assembly of the inhabitants of the municipality. The inhabitants of Gbelov were divided into subjects, free peasants and nobility. The subjects made up the majority of the population in Gbelo. Only a few families belonged to the free peasants and the nobility. They were e.g. families Peškov, Adamovičov, Gajdúšek, Ištvánov. Gbelania performed serf duties until 1848. They had to hand over part of their harvest and work on the manor. The settlement between the subjects and the landowners of 1848 did not go without problems.
