Bojnice National Zoo

The Bojnice National Zoo is the oldest and most visited zoo in Slovakia. It was opened to the public on April 1, 1955. Its current area is 41 hectares, of which more than half is the exhibition part. The zoo is located in the recreational environment of the spa town of Bojnice. Bojnice National Zoo is the only state zoo in the Slovak Republic, its founder is the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic.

The main task of today's zoo is to educate oneself in relation to animals, to enable recreation and relaxation in a pleasant environment, and to learn about the diversity of the animal world. In addition to exhibiting live exhibits, the professional missions of modern zoos also include the breeding of endangered species. For many such species, zoos are the only hope of survival. There are many specific examples where a zoo has saved a species from extinction. Examples are the bison, the Przewalski's horse, the mile deer and the like. The most important factor in the amount of attendance is primarily the relationship of the population of a country to animals and nature (Veselovský 2000). For many people, especially city dwellers, zoos are replacing contact with nature and its living inhabitants. The animals in the zoo are ambassadors of the animal kingdom, who attract children and adults with their uniqueness and beauty. Currently, support for projects to save endangered species in their homeland, where they need it most, is being added to zoo tasks. Unfortunately, even today, even in our country, zoos are seen as a kind of inferior cultural facility of cheap entertainment at the level of a stationary circus. The further east and south, the worse people's attitudes are. In Western countries, these institutions have a strong place in the field of education, training and serious scientific work. This is not the case with us yet. This is indicated by the attitude of some visitors, whose behavior towards animals cannot be said to be respect and admiration for living creatures, it is often arrogant and sometimes, unfortunately, reckless. Also, the funds for the modernization of the zoo and new construction is less than would be necessary.
