The city of Modra gained in 1607 from Emperor Rudolf II. the privilege of a free royal city, which at the same time undertook to build a city fortification to protect its inhabitants. Its construction lasted from 1610 to 1646. It included three entrance gates: the Upper, Lower and Viennese, and two defensive bastions: the northern and southern.

In the preserved northern bastion is today the Gallery of Ignác Bizmayer, a master of figural ceramic creation, which was opened to the public after reconstruction in 1994 within the World Congress of Ceramics. In 2012, it became part of the Museum of Slovak Ceramic Sculpture, with which it forms one closed space.
