SNG can be understood as a collection-creating gallery institution that meets the expectations of the professional and general public: Its task is to develop as a nationwide art institution and at the same time collect, protect and interpret works of art at home and internationally.
We want to present the Slovak National Gallery as an open institution built and operating on basic museum standards, which it not only maintains, but also renews and develops. The gallery should thus be a space from which important stimuli of quality curatorial projects and their presentation will emerge, as well as a discussion and interpretation platform, and finally a guarantor of artistic and creative values.
In practice, this means an ambitious and legible dramaturgy of individual research, acquisition, exhibition and publication projects with a wide conceptual, thematic and stylistic offer, while it is important to maintain the SNG's mission as well as adequate valuation (without overestimating or, conversely, underestimating) new, old, domestic and international art.
Today, in addition to the premises in Bratislava, the SNG also includes a network of four outposts: Zvolen Castle, Strážky Mansion in Spišská Belá, Ľudovít Full Gallery in Ružomberok and the Gallery of Insit Art in Schaubmar's Mill in Pezinok.
