The Nitra Gallery was founded on January 1, 1965. It began its activities in the building of a large seminary - then the Regional Nitra Museum. In the same year, it acquired premises in the building of the former county house, where it is located to this day. She began her exhibition activities in the county house on 12 December 1965 with an exhibition of former and then Nitra artists.

Thanks to its exhibition, collecting and cultural-educational activities, beyond the framework of the city and the district, the gallery was gradually granted regional and, since 1972, regional competence in 1968. In 1980, as part of its administration, the gallery opened the Youth Gallery - a unique one of its kind in Slovakia, which provided space for young artists from all over the country. In 1982, in connection with the administration of works from the estate of acad. painter František Studený renamed the František Studený Gallery. Since 1990, it has been called the Nitra State Gallery. With the establishment of regional cultural centers, the gallery was incorporated under the Ponitrian Cultural Center and its name was Ponitrianska galéria until 1999, when it returned to the original and current name Nitrianska galéria. The Nitra Gallery is a budgetary organization of the Nitra self-governing region (the gallery has been under the auspices of NSK since 2002) with an independent legal personality. The basic mission of the gallery is to purposefully collect, scientifically process and evaluate, professionally manage, protect, use and present works of all disciplines of fine arts of the 20th and 21st centuries. It currently has five exhibition spaces:

Representation halls present important collective nationwide and international projects, curatorial research tasks and also group author exhibitions. The salon is intended for chamber author's presentations. In 2001, the activities of the Youth Gallery were renewed, which maps the work of students and graduates of art colleges. It is also a space in which exhibition projects of students of art history are realized. BUNKER space for alternative art since 2008 provides students, artists and young curators with the opportunity to experiment with contemporary manifestations of art, whether art, theater or music. The color gallery was established in 2010 and is a space for the presentation of educational activities of a gallery teacher.
