Municipal Theater PO Hviezdoslav

The Pavel Országh Hviezdoslav Municipal Theater is the art stage of the Bratislava Cultural and Information Center [BKIS], which has been in its report since 17.10.2009.

It is located in the former building of the Slovak National Bank on the corner of Laurinská and Štúrova streets, built between 1943 and 1947. The project emerged from a public tender for a bank building and a chamber theater. The winners of the competition were architects Ing. arch. Eugen Kramár and Ing. arch. Štefan Lukačovič. In 1944, they completed the rough construction and only the construction of the banking part continued.

In 1948, it was decided to assign the building to the Slovak National Theater and the furnishing of the building with theatrical technology began. The construction was carried out by domestic construction companies and the technological equipment of the theater stage was supplied by foreign companies Wiener Brückenbau and Siemens. The artist František Gajdoš is responsible for the original decoration of the viewpoint, foyers and curtain. The stained glass windows in the foyer were created by the important Slovak painter Janko Alexy. Construction was completed in 1955.

In 2007, the Ministry of Culture sold the building to Bratislava. The city of Bratislava has committed itself that the building will continue to be used for cultural purposes.

The summer of 2013 brought more openness to the theater thanks to the barrier-free modifications that the interior and exterior underwent. Barrier-free adaptations include barrier-free access to the theater via an access ramp, modification of the viewpoint or toilets for people with reduced mobility.

Barrier-free access is available to visitors at the main entrance on Laurinská Street using the access platform. Behind the mouth of the platform there is an entrance hall with a flat surface. The hall leads directly to the locker room, where visitors with reduced mobility will be given priority. There are two places reserved for wheelchair visitors in the viewpoint. They are located on the ground floor on the right in the first row. Toilets with wheelchair access can be used by visitors on the ground floor on the right and left.

The aim of the theater is to gradually make other parts of it accessible to visitors in wheelchairs. MDPOH is also working on the preparation of the second phase of barrier-free adaptations to enable all spectators to have a full-fledged experience of theatrical art.

Tickets for barrier-free places cannot be purchased online, but only directly at the theater box office.
