Pajštún Castle

Pajštún is a castle ruin in western Slovakia near the village of Borinka.

Pajštún Castle belonged to the system of border castles, which in the Little Carpathians took over the function of protecting the northwestern borders of the Hungarian state from the 13th century. The beginnings of the royal castle date back to the second half of the 13th century. It is documented in 1273. The oldest owners shared a manor with Stupava, where they later returned. From the 14th century it belonged to the counts of Svätý Jur and Pezinok continuously until 1526, when the family died out and the property fell into the hands of the Seredys and later the Salmovs. In r. From 1592 to 1867 it belonged to the Pálfi family, later to the Károli family. The castle burned down in the middle of the 18th century, was partially repaired and continued to be used. It has been in ruins since 1809, when it was demolished by Napoleonic troops.

The medieval castle, of which only the remains of the masonry have been preserved, was substantially rebuilt during the Renaissance. The modern Renaissance fortification dates back to the 16th century and was supported by a massive roundel on which cannons could be placed. The fortifications were completed in 1550, it was further improved during the 17th century by the Pálfi family, who completed the basic reconstruction of the castle and its expansion in 1619. Even greater changes occurred during the building modifications in the middle of the 17th century, when they rebuilt the residential buildings and built another external fortification.

The castle buildings have been preserved in fragments around the central courtyard, the area of which is covered by an embankment of damaged masonry. The most connected is the perimeter masonry of palaces and fortifications built into the massif of the castle gate, with preserved openings of windows, arches, entrances, in the masonry with relief arches and traces of vaults. The most impressive are the rafters of the former gallery above the entrance with late Renaissance decoration in the form of mascarons from 1619, which with their diversity document the builder's claims to architecture and its artistic design.
