Čabraď Castle

Čabraď is a castle ruin located near the village of Čabradský Vrbovok in the middle of the Krupina Highlands on a hill above the Litava Valley. Originally, this castle was called Lithuania.

It was built in the 13th century in the village of Čabradský Vrbovok and the first written mention dates from 1276. It belongs to a group of Central Slovak castles, the purpose of which was to protect the roads leading to the mining towns. In the second half of the 16th century, it was an important anti-Turkish fortress, and the Turks tried in vain to conquer it several times. Its medieval core consisted of a central tower protected by four bastions and a castle palace, which stood above a well-controlled bent entrance to the upper courtyard. In the middle of the 15th century, the castle was for a short time also the seat of Spark's troops. In 1511 it became the property of the Archbishop of Esztergom T. Bakócz, who had it modified and rebuilt around 1520. The fortification work and the expansion of living space continued in the second half of the 16th century, mainly in the forecourt. The castle was owned by the Pálffy family at that time and after them it was taken over by the military commander Ján Krušič, originally from Croatia. In 1622, the castle was taken over by another military commander, P. Kohári. The last reconstructions in the 17th century transformed the inner castle into a comfortable manor house. When the Kohari family moved to a newly built stately home in Svätý Anton in the 18th century, the importance of the castle quickly declined. The decline was accelerated by the fact that the owners themselves had it set on fire in 1812 in order to prevent the occupation of the castle by robber knights. A part of the castle is also a granary, built into the castle grounds in the 19th century.

In the last drawings from the 19th century, it can still be seen as a functional building, today it is like a castle in ruins.

The castle is on a hill that flows around the Litava River and thus provides it with natural protection. The upper castle, built on an elongated top, consisted of a tower, a large courtyard with palace buildings and outbuildings, which provided sufficient comfort and provided all the necessities for the aristocracy. The upper castle was entered on the north side through a three-storey basement gate, probably with a drawbridge. On the west side were bastions and smaller bastions, which formed a system of perimeter fortifications or the lower castle. It also consisted of a residential building in the east, probably intended for the crew, a gate with a bastion in the southwest and an entrance gate in the south, again with a tower with a floor above the gate and an advanced gate protected by two massive shooting galleries and a drawbridge.

Čabradský hradný vrch and its surroundings is a national nature reserve with the richest occurrence of reptiles in Slovakia (mainly many snakes live here).
