Due to its strategic location, it was part of the fortification system of the middle Považie. At the beginning of the 14th century, Matúš Čák Trenčiansky seized the castle, during whose reign, specifically in 1316, the first written mention of the castle was recorded. Among the other owners, the robber knights - brothers Rafael and Ján Podmanickí, who reached the peak of power in 1540, when the entire northern part of the Trenčín capital became independent under their leadership, occupied castles from Nové město via Košec, Lednice, Hričov. to Budatín). From the second half of the 16th century, the castle belonged to the Balašov family, who carried out reconstruction and repairs, but eventually left the castle. The end of fame came in 1698, when the imperial army partially demolished it and set it on fire for fear of being settled by the rebels. From 1714, the castle was owned by the Saparis, who also did not use it, so it gradually fell into disrepair. The town of Považská Bystrica, the current owner of the castle, in cooperation with OZ Združenie Hradu Bystrica and the Office of the Government, through grants from the EEA and Norway, started to restore part of it. Today, the castle is one of the most visited monuments in the city. In the area of the castle you will also find its model, binoculars and you can park your bicycles in new bicycle stands.
