The name of Plaveč Castle is probably derived from the tribe of Plavcov (Polovcov), whose Hungarian kings settled in the 11th - 12th centuries on the border area in order to defend the borders. Several owners gradually rebuilt the castle. In the 18th century, the castle lost its military significance. The last inhabitants of the castle were the Paloszay family in the 19th century, but due to the disturbed statics of the castle, they moved to the manor house near Plavč.
The building burned down in 1856 and has been in ruins ever since. Remains of south-eastern masonry with a circular bastion and several walls of the former residential part have been preserved from the castle. Since 2014, the castle is being renovated. Thanks to the contribution of the Ministry of Culture, the European Fund and the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Family with the contribution of the unemployed, the south-east wall was restored in the first stage. Part of the underground space was also discovered. The second stage of the restoration of the castle envisages the repair of the adjacent southeast bastion. From the castle hill there is a beautiful view of the surrounding area.
ACCESS: on foot from the village Plaveč about 10 min. Admission to the ruins of Plaveč Castle is free.
