Archaeological finds date back to the settlement of the castle hill since the Copen Age (ca. 3500 BC). In the 12th century, a stone castle probably stood on the site of the castle hill. Archaeological finds date back to the settlement of the castle hill since the Copen Age (ca. 3500 BC). In the 12th century, a stone castle probably stood on the site of the castle hill. The first written mention of the castle is from 1242, where it is written that Fiľakov Castle resisted the Tatar invasion. The castle was owned by several owners, among them in the years 1311-1321 Matúš Čák Trenčiansky.

In the years 1348 and 1385, it is mentioned in documents as royal property. In 1435 it was put in reserve by the Peréni family, in 1440 the owner of the castle - Queen Elizabeth - entrusted the manor to Ján Jiskra.

In 1483, the castle was conquered by the troops of King Matej Korvín and expelled from the castle of Štefan Peréni. From 1490, the Buda captain Blažej Raškai was entrusted with the administration of the castle. František Bebek married his daughter and got the castle as a dowry.

After the Turkish danger intensified, he had the castle rebuilt into a massive Renaissance fortress in 1551 according to the plans of the Italian builder A. da Vedano. Along with the castle, a city fortification was built next to the castle acropolis. However, despite the efforts of the defenders, in 1554 the castle fell into the hands of the Turks, who settled there for 39 years. From here, the Hamza beg ruled, followed by the Shaman beg of a large part of southern Slovakia - the Fiľak Sandžak.

Imperial troops conquered the castle back from the Turks in 1593. Several commanders took turns on it, for example
1598 - Michal Sörényi
1599 - Honorius Tonhauser
Vice-Captain František Rédei
The castle was restored by order of the parliament in 1602 and 1604, but was immediately occupied by Bočkajov troops.

Frequent military riots between the power groups of the Habsburg Empire and the emperor also forced rapid and repeated adjustments - in 1608, 1609, 1613 and again in 1619 (after the fire of 1615). In the years 1621-1623, the Betlen family fought for the castle. The captain of the castle was Tomáš Bosnyák de Magyarbel.

During the Rákoci uprising, when František Vešeléni was captain, the town was occupied by the imperial army. Both the castle and the town prospered. A watchtower was built on the Red Rock and a crew was permanently stationed on the Watchtower. Meetings and meetings of the surrounding counties were held in the castle.

In the years 1650-1664 Adam Vešeléni was the captain of the castle and from 1657 Štefan Koháry I became the hereditary captain and from 1667 Štefan Koháry II., Who had the castle walls repaired in 1672. During Tököli's anti-Habsburg uprising, he attacked the castle in 1678, but did not conquer it.

In 1682, with the generous support of the Turks (60,000 soldiers), Tököli concentrated on reconquering the castle, which they succeeded in after a difficult siege. The castle burned down, the county archives burned down with it, and the town was destroyed. Since then, the castle is in ruins.

The castle ruins have been preserved since 1972. After the reconstruction of the Bebek bastion, an exhibition on the history of the castle and the town was set up in it.
