Bzovík Fortress

Bzovík is originally a Benedictine (later Premonstratensian) monastery rebuilt into a fortress (castle), near the village of Bzovík in the Krupina district in the Banská Bystrica region.

The building of the Bzovice monastery is proof that sometimes it is not easy to clearly determine the type of architectural monument. Monasteries have historically been the target of enemy attacks, and this has necessitated their fortification to fortify buildings or fortresses. In the area, which came under threat from the Turkish danger in the 16th century, the towns and later the two oldest monasteries in Hronský Beňadik and Bzovík were fortified at an accelerated pace.
