There were mills on every estate, in almost every town or village. In the modern era, we encounter two basic types of mills - landowners and serfs, but there were also mills belonging to the church (churches). The mills grinded grain for the needs of either the nobility or their subjects. Landowners also often leased mills to their subjects, under pre-determined conditions. As a rule, the mill was leased for a period of three or five years, after which the contracts were either extended or the manor entered into a new contract with another tenant at an agreed price.
