Vihorlat Museum in Humenné

The beginnings of the history of the Vihorlat Museum date back to 1960 and are connected with the decision of the Council of the Municipal National Committee that the renovated manor house in Humenné will also serve a museum purpose. We obtained the status of the District Museum of National History in 1964. Since 2002, the Prešov self-governing region has been the founder of the museum. The collection area was delimited by the borders of the districts of Humenné, Snina and Medzilaborce.

A more substantial expansion of the museum's collections took place in the second half of the 1970s and in the early 1980s. which results in the strengthening of the organization's staff by professionals. At present, more than one hundred thousand pieces of collection items are concentrated in the museum's collections. Despite the authenticity of each of them, the most valuable are the finds of Celtic coins (Birds), the mass find of coins from the 17th century (Topoľa), unique antique weapons and armor, Baroque icons, valuable paintings, original furniture and many other rare collectibles. With the growing number of collections and the development of research activities, the museum is creating favorable conditions for exhibition and exhibition activities. The first permanent exhibition "Culture of Feudal Housing" was opened to the public as early as 1971 and gradually expanded and re-installed (1982, 1987, 1991) forms the basis of the museum's presentation. In 1973, an exhibition of recent history was opened. In August 1984, an exhibition of folk architecture and housing was opened to the public. The Oresta Dubay Gallery Hall has been a part of the museum since 1989, and the natural history exhibition was added in 1990. In the years 1996-2008, the life and history of the Roma ethnic group in Eastern Slovakia was visited by the exhibition From the History of the Roma in Slovakia. So far, the last open permanent exhibition, which has been offered to the public by the museum since 2009, is the Sacral Exhibition with the Chapel of the Virgin Mary in the original premises of the manor house in Humenné.
