The Bishop's Palace originated from the former Minorite monastery. Its history began with the reconstruction of the building of the town hospital and poorhouse into a new monastery, which was acquired by the minorities in 1,673th

The activities of the minorities in Prešov ended with the order of Emperor Joseph II. of 12 July 1787, by which the monastery was abolished, despite the pleas of the town hall and the bishop of Jáger with the monarch himself.

In 1791, the seat of the Greek Catholic Vicariate was moved from Košice to Prešov, to the premises of the former Minorite monastery. September 22, 1818 Pope Pius VII. issued the bull Relata semper, by which he established the Greek Catholic diocese in Prešov. The whole complex of the former monastery was then in 1821 assigned to the first bishop of the newly established Prešov diocese, Gregor Tarkovič.

Jozef Gaganec, the second bishop of Prešov, gave in 1848 to make an extensive reconstruction of the seat, which created today's two-storey palace building with a classicist facade. Above the main entrance was a large triangular shield (tympanum), in which the inscription "His Majesty Ferdinand V. King of Hungary, by grace he built in 1848", above the inscription is embossed coat of arms of the Greek Catholic diocese surrounded by a bishop's chain. A cross is attached to it. The dominant feature of the central part of the building is a large dome.
