The Calvary in Prešov was established at the beginning of the 18th century, by the Jesuits during the period of re-Catholicization on the initiative of the Association of the Dying Christ.

The construction of the first sacral buildings began in 1720, some chapels of the Stations of the Cross were built in the 19th century. The first was in the fall of r. 1721 consecrated chapel of Christ on the Mount of Olives and cross.

The construction was carried out with funds from the city and donors from among the townspeople and the surrounding nobility. The whole Calvary complex was not completed until 1893 and in addition to the church of St. The cross consists of fourteen chapels of the Stations of the Cross, the Chapel of the Holy Steps, the catacombs and the adjacent cemetery. The entire Calvary complex has been restored and modified in the past. Even at present, construction, restoration and rescue work is underway on several buildings. In 2019, a sightseeing telescope was installed on Calvary.
