Chapel of St. Rocha

In a beautiful mountain valley surrounded by forests of the Little Carpathians, about half an hour's drive northwest of the village lies a memorial chapel at the source of clear mountain water, a place suitable for relaxation. Every year for centuries, the inhabitants of Chtelnice traveled here in a procession with music, guild and church flags, and with them the inhabitants of the area.

This tradition dates back to the end of the 17th century. As a thank you for the end of the terrible plague in the years 1680 - 1688, the people of Chtelnice built a late Renaissance chapel here, while they solemnly promised to preserve the memory by the annual procession to come here. This event is commemorated by the altarpiece of the patrons of the chapel with the saints Rochus, Rosalia, Sebastian and Izidor. This rare Baroque oil painting on canvas is from the end of the 17th century. On the sides in wooden carved niches are wooden statues of Róchus and Immakulata. They are probably from the end of the 18th century. The canonical visitation of 1788 stated that the chapel was built more than a hundred years ago by the inhabitants who were sacrificed for their rescue from the plague. There are many plague monuments in Slovakia, but few similar ones. Although the building has been on the list of immovable monuments of western Slovakia since 1963, until recently it fell into disrepair. Not only the statues, the altar painting, but also the whole building were significantly damaged. The restoration began in 1983 with the restoration of paintings and statues, the chapel was restored from the outside and inside in 1986, and the surroundings of the chapel were also modified. It was also in the same state of dilapidation in 1788, when the chapel threatened to fall. The landowner, the owner of its territory, wanted to have it demolished, at the request of the Chtelnič family and the intervention of Tomáš Chovanček, the chapel was preserved, the parish bought it. The period report features a statue of the Virgin Mary of the Seven Sorrows inside, today its fate is unknown. Opposite the chapel is a stone sculpture of Christ's baptism with John the Baptist from 1806. Biblical texts in Old Slovak, designed by Tomáš Chovanček, are engraved on the pedestal. The first is the request of the Khtelniks: “S.Jane! Our powerful protector! Ask us from the Lamb, who captures the sins of the world, the grace and gift of repentance, virtue, blessing and salvation. Amen. " Another text of the voice of a caller in the desert is with a chronogram, the third Latin was dedicated by Tomáš Chovanček. On the left side of the pedestal and on the tombstone next to it is an inscription in memory of Matiáš Mačáni, a hermit who lived here alone for 50 years and died in 1789.
