Church of the Holy Trinity

The greedy people call it the lower or rough church, it lies in the northern part of the square. At this place originally in the first half of the 16th century stood the chapel of St. Juraj, which is documented in writing in the visitation of 1560. Even then it was in poor condition, but even so, church ceremonies were often held for the landowner and his officials under the influence of the parish priest Stefan. During this period and in this area, a new center of the town began to form. According to another report from 1634, the chapel and the upper church were half-ruined.

Even this originally early Baroque church was much smaller than today's. According to the visitation of 1731, it was built of stone and furnished according to the model of the parish church. They had three altars inside, two towers of unequal size outside, two bells and a tower clock. The cemetery was not built next to the church, but on the present site above the village. Under the church is a crypt with the tombs of secular dignitaries, such as members of the Nevedians, Pálfiovci and local priests. The church was a branch of the parish church of St. J.Kristitel. They located it in the opposite position from today's, the presbytery stood on the site of today's choir with a tower, the main entrance with the front facing east, besides it there were two side entrances. The ceremonies were accompanied by a ten-manual organ. The great fire of 1747 destroyed the tower of the church in such a way that the summoned masters from Trnava did not want to repair it, only to demolish it. The church was often repaired by masters from abroad in the service of the Erdődy counts. In 1759, Anton Erdődy invited the stonemason Ján Fidler, who came from Austria, from Bratislava. In 1769, in addition to the work in the mansion, he made red marble shells in the church, and other works were done by the Bratislava sculptor Ján Jozef Sartori.

Fires in 1784 and 1787 damaged the church, so both towers had to collapse, instead a belfry with three bells was built separately on the square: the largest triple bell weighed 10q, donated by Count Ján Nepomuk Erdődy, the middle bell of P.Mária weighed 6q, the smallest St. Florián and Ján Nepomucký only 3.5 q. In 1788, on the count's order, they restored the main altar, which is evidenced by the coat of arms placed there.

Today's parish church was decided to be built after big fires in 1784 and 1787, which destroyed two churches almost to the ground. The necessity of the building was justified by the fact that after the abolition of the monastery with the church of St. Kataríny in Dechticy in 1782, the number of visitors to the churches in Chtelnice increased, but they did not meet the size requirements. The conditions for the new building were met by a lower church with an advantageous location in the center of the village, which also suited the landowners. That is why in 1794 they started building a new, bigger and more beautiful one on the site of the original church.

The foundation stone of the new building was laid on May 6, 1794, this event is commemorated by a plaque with the names of important secular and ecclesiastical dignitaries along with the characteristics of that period. The construction required a lot of building material, more than three hundred thousand pieces of bricks alone were consumed, fifty thousand of which were provided by the landlord. The total financial costs exceeded the sum of 24,600 guilders in silver.

The list of monuments included the church among the artistically valuable classicist architecture with elements of the Empire and Rococo, which has no equivalent in the area.

Next to the tower are stone statues of the apostles Peter and Paul with attributes. On the north side of the church is the entrance to the extensive crypt with the tombs of local priests and noble families.
