In 1777, the Province XVI of the Spiš towns bought the town hall for its own purposes. Hence the name Provincial House. After the demise of the province, it was leased, until it was finally bought from Spišská župa in 1894 by Sporiteľňa XVI Spišských měst. Since 1955, it has exhibited the museum, which was established on 7 May 1951 by a decision of the ONV Council in Spišská Nová Ves.
The names of the museum have changed during its existence: 1951 - District Museum of Homeland Studies, 1955 - Museum of Homeland Studies, 1971 Museum of Homeland Studies Spiš with a gallery, 1984 - Museum of Homeland Studies, 1996 Spiš Museum in Spišská Nová Ves, 1997 - Museum of Spiš. During the existence of the museum, its expositions also changed. The current Exposition of Nature and History of the Spiš Region was installed in 1992. It provides the visitor with geographical, geological, paleontological, botanical and zoological characteristics of orographic units: Slovak Paradise, Spišskogemerské rudohorie, Hornádska kotlina and Levočské vrchy, while in each part are presented specifics, peculiarities and the uniqueness of the nature of the represented territory. The history of the region is presented by exhibits from collections from archeology, mining and crafts.
