Tabačka KulturFabrik

Tabačka Kulturfabrik is a unique cultural center and an open zone for art, creativity and cooperation in Košice.

Her story began to be written in 2009 in the so-called old Tabacka. Peter Radkoff and a team of collaborators from the civic association Bona Fide breathed new life into the abandoned space of the former tobacco factory. First, on their own, and at their own expense, they created an alternative cultural space in one of the buildings. Today, known as Fabricafe, it has so far retained its genius loci and original atmosphere. Tabačka was the third social center after IC Cultur Train and Kasárny Kulturpark, which Radkoff and his team founded in Košice. They are known for their many years of work within the Košice artistic community, the active building of a modern cultural infrastructure in the metropolis of the East and the promotion of independent culture throughout Slovakia.

For the establishment of a cultural-creative factory, it proved to be a groundbreaking decision of the Košice self-governing region (KSK) to support the development of the creative economy in the region and at the same time invest in the renewal of its property. In April 2011, the KSK City Council approved the Concept for the Development of the Creative Economy and Tabačka Kulturfabrik became its first concrete project. Thanks to an extensive investment in the reconstruction and modernization of a dilapidated industrial area, the new Tabačka Kulturfabrik with a usable area of up to 2,500 m2 was able to open its gates in May 2015.

With the space, the program possibilities have also significantly expanded. Tabačka has become a place for the presentation and production of various genres of contemporary art. From concerts, theater performances, through contemporary dance, a new circus, exhibitions, multicultural events, interactive installations to workshops, lectures and a range of community activities. A novelty was the support of initiatives from various areas of the creative industry. Tabačka has become a workspace for the community of young entrepreneurs. They work in HUB co-working or rent one of thirteen separate offices. At the same time, they provide complementary services for the cultural and artistic program.

Tobacco supports a multicultural society, an open way of thinking, experimentation and creativity. It seeks to provide an educational background and develop critical thinking.

"Our intention is to build a public space that is a cultural center for all. A place for meeting people, sharing knowledge, creating ideas together and implementing ideas. With an emphasis on participation, we create lasting and important relationships between Tabačka and its community, which also supports the involvement of the general public. That is why there are many activities initiated by the community in the Tabačka program, not only by our own playwrights, “says Peter Radkoff, the founder and director of Tabačka Kulturfabrik.

Tabačka is also an active subject in building local, regional and state cultural policies. He is significantly involved in cooperation with municipal and regional self-government. Its people participated in the preparation of the UNESCO Creative City of Media Art and the Regional Creative Center projects. They also participate in the creation of the KSK grant support system for cultural events and organizations.

Through cooperation with international partners, the resources of the Kulturfabrik tobacco also become resources that support the development of an independent culture in Europe. Tabačka has been a member of the Trans Europe Halles network of independent cultural centers in Europe (TEH - www.teh.net ) since 2007 and a co-founder of the network of independent cultural centers in Slovakia (ANTENA - www.antena.sk ) since 2008.
