Greek Catholic wooden church of St. Luke

A unique wooden church in Brežany was built in 1727. It is dedicated to St. to the evangelist Luke.

Initially, all the inhabitants of the village were Greek Catholics, but in the 50s they switched to the Western ceremony due to various Orthodox efforts. The church remained the property of the Greek Catholic Church, but was used by Roman Catholic believers.

From the construction point of view, the church building is three-part, three-place, one-tower with two crosses. The nave and the sanctuary have a log construction, a columned tower. The roof is in the shape of a pyramid. It is covered with shingles. The decorative three-armed cross mounted on the top is one of the most beautiful of all the temples of the eparchy. The entrance to the temple is from the west through the open vestibule. The nave and sanctuary have horizontally laid beams. The gaps between the individual beams are grouted and bleached. At present, two bells are hung in the tower. The temple was partially restored in 1999 and also in 2001.

The interior of the church dates from the first half of the 18th century, an iconostasis from 1733. It has four rows on four floors. The first row contains the icons of St. Bishop Nicholas, the Mother of God Hodigitrie, Christ the Teacher and the icon of St. evangelist Luke. The second row of holidays has Mandylion instead of the Last Supper icon. The third apostolic order contains in the middle the icon of Christ the High Priest together with the Mother of God and St. John the Baptist. The fourth row of prophets consists of twelve icons. Exceptional is the omission of the classic Crucifixion, or at least the cross, which normally ends the iconostasis in the middle of the top and ends with a sloping Mandylion.

The furniture includes an altar with the image of the Coronation of the Virgin (1782), a side altar with the image of Pieta, a side altar with the image of Christ (second half of the 18th century). It is worth mentioning the icon of Aaron inside the diaconal (service) door.
