Difficulty and length of the route
The ascent to the Peško cave is not difficult or long. An educational trail will lead you to it, and in the case of a fresh pace, you can be with it within fifteen minutes. This trip is good as a recreational walk to explore, or an additional quick trip to somewhere else in the area. The cave is easily accessible and even the smallest ones can playfully take a trip to it.
Route information
We will visit the village of Bretka, which is located on the northeastern outcrop of the Rimava Basin. Right here, near the church you will find an asphalt crossroads. This is where our steps begin, and I would like to point out that the path to the Peško Cave is not the best marked and you need to pay close attention to the tourist signs. From the bus stop we go to the right side, where we find a paved path up to the walls. Next, we stick to the nature trail, which takes us to a meadow and then pulls us down into a pleasant little grove. And just a few steps and you are at the cave. If you would like to continue from the Peško Cave, follow the nature trail, which will show you the entire circuit around the Muráň Break, ending in the Hutnianská Cave.
Interesting facts
Peško Cave, or also Peškő, is actually a karst tunnel, which is open at both ends. Its length is 17 meters and at the end you will find a kind of balcony. It is located in the massif of the eponymous brala, which rises north of the village Bretka. This cave is a part of the educational trail Prielom Muráňa, so for the more active ones it is better to choose the whole educational circuit. Interestingly, the name of the cave originated from two different words and even from two different languages - the Slavic word pest, which meant furnace or cave, and the Hungarian word kő, which means rock or stone.
From the point of view of history, we know that this cave was inhabited as early as the Stone Age, as evidenced by the found archaeological remains. During the Second World War, it also had its justification, as it served as a shelter for people from the ongoing fighting.
Finally, we add that the Peško Cave is open to the public.
