Vegetable Church of St. Ladislav

Vegetable Church of St. Ladislava is a place of pilgrimage, which is full of energy. It has its own magical atmosphere and has been a place of pilgrimage for believers for years. I wouldn't mind! After all, the beautiful outlines of the ancient church and a miraculous spring, but who would resist this atmosphere.

Difficulty and length of the route
To the plant church of St. Ladislava is not a demanding tourism, but we would not call it a short car trip. The truth is that although you walk through light and undemanding terrain along a wide forest road, you go to it for less than two hours. This may discourage some, but right next to the church there is the possibility of grilling, there is a gazebo and a pretty beautiful meadow. In any case, recreational excursionists or families with children will certainly be able to handle this route. In conclusion, so much so that if you want to walk and want to see something unconventional and unique, this trip is perfect for you.

Route information
Despite the fact that the plant church of St. Ladislava is mentioned everywhere as part of the village Debraď, we chose the route from the opposite Drienovec. Probably because it's marked and there's nowhere to get lost. Drienovec is a village near Moldava nad Bodvou, which can already be used as a landmark. From here, our steps follow the yellow tourist sign to Ladislav's spring. We will go through the Drienov Spa, where we can stop to see the Drienov Cave. You can only look at it from the outside, because you would need rubber boots to enter it. The road will continue along a forest path to the church itself. As mentioned above - no difficult terrain, just a longer walk.

Interesting facts
I admit that I prefer this category for such monuments. As the name suggests, the plant church of St. Ladislava is a unique monument. Look for any frescoes painted on the windows, or other decorations, or massive church spiers. In this case, it was replaced by peace, nature and atmosphere.

The first written mention of the church in this place would be found from the 16th century, but in 1570 it was destroyed by the Turks. The work was completed by the church, which stopped caring for the dilapidated building, and this temple slowly fell into disrepair and was opened. The effort to restore the church came on the initiative of people in the area, who built a smaller chapel here after the Second World War. It didn't last either, because the then regime had the chapel burned down. However, the spring of water with the ruins of the chapel nevertheless became a place of pilgrimage, so it was decided that a place for believers would be built on the site of the ancient church and chapel. However, as this area occurs in the Slovak Karst, they had to use only ecological and natural materials. And here is the beginning of what you see today. A perimeter wall was built on the ruins of a medieval church, wooden beams were added and the plant church of St. Ladislav. And why a plant church? Notice how the wooden beams slowly encircle the climbing plants, not to mention the tree in the center of the temple, which forms a kind of guardian here.

The legend speaks of the Hungarian king Ladislav I. Svätý, who marched with his army through this territory to fight against the Kumans. However, his army was weakened as they lacked water for a long time. The king then thrust his sword into the ground, creating the emblem of the cross and praying. As he drew his sword, water gushed from the ground at that point. That is why this spring is known today as Ladislav's spring.
