The Great Stift is one of the largest historical buildings in the city. The extensive Renaissance building served as a manor house of the Esterházy family. Gradually, various institutions alternated in it. In 1773, a female reformatory was established here by the monarch. The rooms of the manor were rebuilt into cells, a textile manufactory was set up in part of the building, where women from the reformatory worked. In 1780, by the decision of Maria Theresa, a town orphanage was established in Veľký Štift.
