The free royal town of Skalica is an interesting locality in terms of history, architecture and urban planning, where there are many valuable secular monuments, churches and monasteries in a relatively small area of the historic core. To this day, Skalica has retained the historic character of the city center, so it can now boast a relatively well-preserved historic core - the city's monument zone.

The free royal town of Skalica is an interesting locality in terms of history, architecture and urban planning, where there are many valuable secular monuments, churches and monasteries in a relatively small area of the historic core. To this day, Skalica has retained the historic character of the city center, so it can now boast a relatively well-preserved historic core - the city's monument zone.

The city center consists of a unique triangular square lined with several historic sacral and secular buildings, some of which are also in the adjacent streets. The wider surroundings are lined with a torso of a medieval fortification, which is best preserved near the Franciscan complex. In the past centuries, the surroundings of the Rotunda of St. Juraja, so-called castle with narrow cobbled streets. These monuments, together with small, distinctive buildings, form a rare and relatively well-preserved model of medieval settlement.
