The free royal town of Skalica is an interesting locality in terms of history, architecture and urban planning, where there are many valuable secular monuments, churches and monasteries in a relatively small area of the historic core. The city center consists of a unique triangular square lined with several historic sacral and secular buildings, some of which are also in the adjacent streets. The wider surroundings are lined with a torso of a medieval fortification, which is best preserved near the Franciscan complex. In the past centuries, the surroundings of the Rotunda of St. Juraja, so-called castle with narrow cobbled streets. These monuments, together with small, distinctive buildings, form a rare and relatively well-preserved model of medieval settlement.
