He was accepted as a cleric of the Ostrihom archbishopric in 1813. After turning 24, he was ordained a priest, he was a chaplain in the Ostrihom diocese and a Slovak preacher in Pest. From January 1830 he was a professor at the Zagreb Academy. He became a champion of the Croatian language and, as a censor of the Croatian press, allowed Croats to defend themselves against Magyarization. In 1847, he was appointed a canon of the Zagreb chapter and elected a member of the Hungarian Diet. He was a supporter of the proposals of Ľ. Štúr, which he presented at the Hungarian Diet in 1848 for the re-introduction of the mother tongue in elementary schools and at religious services. On August 30, 1850, the monarch appointed him bishop of Banská Bystrica. Together with other Slovak patriots, he built Slovak grammar schools. On December 12, 1861, at the head of the Slovak embassy, he appeared before the Emperor František Jozef I to present to him the petition of the Slovaks and the Memorandum of the Slovak Nation. On August 3, 1863, he became the chairman of Matica slovenská. Thanks to him, the Roman See agreed to celebrate the feast of Cyril and Methodius on July 5. Štefan Moyses died on July 5, 1869.
