Chapel of St. Cross in Trnava

Completely outside the city, relatively far north of the city pond, stands the Chapel of St. for almost two hundred years. Cross.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the events taking place on a completely different side of the world affected not only the lives of the people of Trnava. In 1829, cholera broke out in the Ganges area of India. The disease spread through Russia to North America, but also in the opposite direction, through the Urals to Eastern and Central Europe, to the British Isles. The "colonial globalization" of the 19th century also contributed to its spread. Advancing through the territory of Slovakia, the plague arrived in Trnava in the summer of 1831. It broke out on August 1, 1831 and the last victim was recorded on September 24. In less than two months, about 1,300 people died here. The disease does not differentiate between people, so Archbishop's Deputy Archbishop Ján Iváni, elected to office that very year, became one of the victims. A funeral chapel was probably built above his grave. The simple construction of a circular floor plan has an entrance highlighted by a risalit with a triangular tympanum. In addition to the brick altar canteen, the inscription commemorative plaque of the deceased J. Iváni is preserved in the interior. Until the 20th century, the cemetery with a chapel stood completely alone outside the city, but with the gradual expansion of the local residential district of Kopánka, the development came here. Even in the first half of the 20th century, funeral masses were served here. In the 1970s, the last few tombstones were located in its vicinity, but at the end of the century, the cemetery definitively gave way to residential terraced buildings. Since then, the Chapel of St. The cross is the only reminder of the tragic consequences of the 2nd cholera pandemic in Trnava.
