Plague pillars in Galanta

In Galanta, cholera still existed in the 19th century. The last known epidemic in the city was in 1873. In memory of this event and thanks to overcoming the epidemic, but also to protect against it, gallants built four plague pillars in the field behind the city.

Their position on four sides of the world was supposed to symbolize the protection of the city from all sides. To date, three of the original four columns have been preserved. Južný, towards Matúškovo, was demolished during the construction of the grain silo. The columns were gradually restored, west to Ul. August 29 in 2003-2004, east behind the stadium on the way to Šaľa in 2005-2006 and north on Seredská cesta in 2008. Throughout the Galant region, there are mostly Baroque crosses and the Passion of Christ in the villages and on their edges which still complete the atmosphere and colors of the country.
