Reformed church in Šamorín

The rarest historical monument in Šamorín is the building of the Reformed church, which is one of the oldest and most beautiful churches on Žitný ostrov.

The church was originally built in the third quarter of the 13th century in the Romanesque style. The original building consists of today's main nave and sanctuary without the sacristy and side naves. The fact that a nave and tower were added to the church suggests that the church probably once served as a local fortress and its tower could be used to monitor the movement of enemies or impending dangers such as fires or floods. During the coming centuries, the church was rebuilt several times. It originally had a beamed vault. In the 14th century, a southern nave was added, over which a ribbed cross vault was built. After 1449, the main nave was divided by octagonal pillars, which supported the old Gothic rib vault. In the arch of the sanctuary, the apostles from the Old Testament are depicted in medallions placed in decorative circular frames and provided with ribbons with inscriptions. Up in the middle is David with Crown King Solomon. The north side wall depicts an escape from Egypt, below which is a tapestry-like painting of the Virgin Mary on her deathbed, surrounded by the apostles, and above her a vault depicts her burial and ascension. The last image of the cycle in the triangle situated towards the main nave shows the coronation of Mary. The placement of these paintings in the main place is proof that the church was built in honor of the Virgin Mary. The reliquary carved from stone was probably part of the original church. The kneeling figure above him is probably the founder and patron of the church. There are 2 coats of arms on the south walls, probably symbols of the queen. The original colors are difficult to determine, so it is only assumed that it is the coat of arms of a queen of the Arpad family.
