Chestnut

In the middle of the village of Gáň stands a more than 100-year-old protected tree, the horse chestnut tree.

Horse-chestnut was originally domesticated in the Balkans and the eastern Mediterranean. It has spread throughout Europe and is often planted as a decorative tree in parks, alleys and close to human dwellings. It blooms in May and June. The fruits are capsules covered with thorns, 6 cm in size. Inside each capsule, 1 - 3 chestnuts ripen. They are glossy, brown to brownish-red in color with a pale face. They are not edible.

Horse-chestnut is a massive deciduous tree of spherical shape with brittle wood, growing to a height of up to 25 meters. Its branches are brown-feathered at a young age, the buds are very sticky.
