The first traces of the feast of the Virgin Mary are observed in the 15th century. The first mention of it comes from the year 1412, when it was mentioned at the church assembly in Cologne. He was appointed by Pope Benedict XIII for the whole Church. in 1727. The same pope allowed the Virgin Mary of the Seven Sorrows to be worshiped as the Patroness of Slovakia. The largest national shrine of the Virgin Mary of the Seven Sorrows is the basilica minor in Šaštín. The history of this church dates back to 1564. It was declared a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI. in 1964. In 1966, the same pope duly appointed and proclaimed the Virgin Mary of the Seven Sorrows as the Chief Patron of Slovakia. Every year, on this holiday and in Turice, thousands of pilgrims travel to the Šaštín Basilica, where they are the main pilgrimages to honor our Patroness and ask for help in the pain and suffering of everyday life.
