The picture in the niche only refers to the gracious image of the Virgin Mary of Trnava in the Baroque Marian chapel at the Basilica of St. Nicholas in Trnava, which was built in the years 1739 - 1741 by Archbishop Imrich Esterházy.
The Virgin Mary of Trnava is a copy of a painting from the Church of St. Alexei and St. Boniface in Rome. According to the tradition of St. Alexei left Rome for Syria and lived there as a hermit. Years later, he returned from there with the image of the Virgin Mary and lived in Rome under the steps of his parents' house. It wasn't until he died that his parents learned that it was their son. They built a chapel there and placed a painting in it. Later over the tomb of St. Alexeja grew up a church.
It is assumed that the Trnava copy was made during the studies by the future Cardinal František Forgáč. After returning in 1585, he placed a painting in the Basilica of St. Nicholas.
Bloody tears appeared on the painting in 1663. At that time, Hungary was threatened by the Turks, who did not attack Trnava, although they plundered its surroundings. The painting teared three times during the Kuruk War in 1708, on July 5 and August 10 and 11. At that time, a commission was set up to investigate the tear case. Based on the results of the investigation, the Archbishop of Esztergom, Kristián August, approved on 19 December 1708 the public respect for the image of the Virgin Mary of Trnava. In 1710 the plague raged in Trnava. When all human resources failed, the helpless inhabitants of the city, led by the municipality, fled to the Virgin Mary. With solemn vows, they undertook, after the previous fast, to celebrate the Feast of the Sacrifice of the Virgin Mary and to celebrate Holy Mass before the gracious image. They made a commemorative document about it. They prayed, fasted, and on November 21, 1710, on the feast of the Sacrifice of the Virgin Mary, took the painting to the streets. The plague miraculously stopped that day.
Respect for the Virgin Mary later went through periods of prosperity and disinterest. After years of decline, respect revived in the 1940s, when a new tradition of novena was created. Today, believers come to the image of grace to ask for God's help and to thank them for the graces bestowed.
