Statue of St. Ján Nepomucký- Voderada

The statue was erected in honor of John of Nepomuk, a highly revered saint in the past, popular during re-Catholicization, promoted by the Jesuit monastic order.

Sv. Ján Nepomucký was born in Pomuk near Pilsen around 1345. His father was probably of German origin. The name "Nepomucký" was created by incorrectly reading the Latin version of his name "de Pomuk". The former village of Pomuk is now called Nepomuk. John received his education in the Cistercian monastery, then in Žatec in the famous Latin schools and finally got to the university in Prague, which was founded at that time by Emperor Charles IV. In 1370, John became a notary and scribe in the archbishop's office. He was also the personal secretary of the bishop. In 1380 he also became a pastor in the parish of St. Havel in the Old Town. In the years 1382-1387 he studied canon law in Padua, where he received his doctorate, and then returned to Prague. He became a canon and vicar general of the archbishopric. He was thus in charge of many responsible roles in the Church. In addition, he preached in the church of St. Vitus and the Týn Church. He was very pious, zealous and conscientious.

When Emperor Charles IV was on the throne, there were very good relations between the archbishopric and the imperial court. However, this changed with the arrival of Charles' son Wenceslas IV, who was crowned Czech king when he was two years old. At first he followed his father's example, but later he devoted himself to hunting, having fun. In addition, he was very angry and angry. He took a liking to the Benedictine abbey in Kladruby in western Bohemia. However, when he did not receive it, his anger turned literally against the whole Church in Bohemia. He captured John and two other archbishop's collaborators. He did not capture the archbishop just because he was protected by his gunmen. He later released the other two, but he had Ján pulled on a vise, had him burned and tortured in another way, and finally had him dragged away at night and thrown from the Prague bridge into the Vltava River. It happened on March 20, 1393. After a few days, his body was found and buried in the church of St. The cross; later they transferred him to the church of St. Welcome.

It is said that St. John is a martyr of the confessional secret. The king was said to have questioned him about the sins of his wife, Sophia, who was very religious. She went to John to confess. The king suspected her of unbelief, because he himself was committing this vice. However, since John did not reveal anything, he tortured him and eventually killed him. This tradition is confirmed by the fact that the language of St. Ján Nepomucký remained intact. John was declared a saint in 1729.
