There are almost 90 species of poplars growing in the world. In Slovakia, we can most often meet black or white poplar (Populus alba), or aspen (Populus tremula). Depending on the species, they grow to a height of 50 meters. Due to their weak resilience, they live on average under 100 years.

Black poplar likes water - a lot of water. It is planted mainly on the banks of streams, rivers, ponds and the like. They have soft and light wood, which is used to make thin boards (veneers) for furniture but also matches. Wood is suitable for paper production.

Our ancestors diligently planted poplars along the fields, where they served as windbreaks. They protected the soil and plants from wind and drying. They provided shelter for animals, promoted biodiversity, and aesthetically complemented the agricultural landscape.
